Kick-Off Event Blood Bank of Delmarva
Are you ready to "Give Your Best Life?" We are! Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) is bringing together blood donors and blood donation recipients to help kick off the 2019 Summer Blood Drive (SBD) on Tuesday, May 21 in their Christiana Donor Center, from 5-7 p.m.
The SBD launch is a rally to inspire the community about the need to donate blood during the summer months. Summer is a crucial period that underscores the importance of maintaining the local blood supply. High school and college blood drives account for 25 percent of blood collected during the regular school year, so when schools close for the summer, blood reserves drop.
To that end, Blood Bank of Delmarva has lined up some outstanding human-interest stories. Speakers will talk about their individual experiences donating blood and urge others to do the same. Shane Simmons and Jason Painter will be at the Christiana Donor Center will speak about how blood transfusions saved their premature baby, Maverick Ford Painter, late last summer at Christiana Hospital.
Other speakers include:
· Riley Jadick, 7, of Team Riley fame, and her mother, Robin
· St. Georges Technical High School blood drive coordinator Linda Wirt and students Ashley Smith and Rose Buesmaill
· William Penn High School blood drive coordinator Taylor Anderson and students Makayla Robinson and Darren Ryals
· Local actor and platelets donor Tim Carr
· Platelets donor and BBD ambassador John Nanni
· Camille Pringle, organizer of the AJ Moore Hero Drive
· Michael Waite, of WJBR, master of ceremonies
BBD maintains the community blood supply through the summer with friendly competition between local businesses, hospitals and faith based organizations that hold blood drives. BBD also relies on donors to take time out of their summer schedules to give blood at one of our four donor centers.
Formal remarks will take place at 6 p.m. in the Christiana Donor Center Atrium. The SBD theme this year, Give Your Best Life, means we are at our best selves, living our best selves when we are part of a community. Prepare to be inspired, and enjoy some good food.
All presenting donors on May 21 will be the first to receive the official SBD T-shirt. Weekly, two winners will be selected for a $50 gift card and several other prizes will be given away throughout the summer.
