Wilmington Fire Department Blood Drive scheduled for September 26 in memory of three fallen firefighters
On September 26, the Wilmington Fire Department is scheduled to hold the fourth annual blood drive in memory of brave firefighters Jerry Fickes, Ardythe Hope and Christopher Leach lost in the line of duty.
The Blood Bank of Delmarva and the Wilmington Fire Department need your help to fill this blood drive. With high school and college blood drive on hiatus, that has meant a 25 percent reduction in blood collections. Therefore, Saturday’s drive in honor of the fallen firefighters is all the more critical.
Wilmington Fire Department Battalion Chief John Looney is working with Blood Bank of Delmarva Donor Recruiter Desso Bryant who, thus far, have filled 30 percent of 80 appointments. They hope to get to 100 percent capacity when all is said and done.
The blood drive is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, September 26 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom Street, Wilmington, DE 19806.
The Blood Bank of Delmarva must maintain a seven-day inventory to supply 19 Delmarva hospitals, and inventory levels for key blood types are hovering around three days (O positive) and four days (B positive), among others.
It takes 350 donors per day to help BBD keep all 19 hospitals in Delmarva stocked with the blood products they need for patients.

In addition to the memorial blood drive, WFD is collecting food and toiletries to benefit Lutheran Community Services at 2809 Baynard Blvd. All WFD stations and WFD Fire Marshal’s Office are collection locations for anyone willing to donate those items.
