Bansal will share insights from his co-authored research, “Redesigning Harvesting Processes and Improving Working Conditions in Agribusiness,” that investigates the potential benefits of redesigning agribusiness operations — specifically, harvesting processes — to enhance both firm performance and working conditions of employees. He is a professor of supply chain management and faculty of operations research at the Pennsylvania State University’s Smeal College of Business. His research is on decision making under risk and uncertainty, and he investigates three dimensions of this theme: first, how to obtain managerial judgments for the quantification of uncertainty when historical data are not available or are not relevant. Second, how do managers perceive uncertainties when they are faced with uncertain business environments. Third, what protocols can support managerial decision making under uncertainty. He works with firms to investigate such problems for various industry domains.
His research has appeared in Operations Research, Management Science, Production and Operations Management, among other journals. He has also written teaching cases based on several of his research projects. He's an associate editor at Operations Research, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, and INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics.
He has won several awards for his research and teaching, including the Wagner prize from INFORMS, Decision Analysis Society Publication Award, Decision Analysis Society Practice Award, INFORMS Case Competition, Poets&Quants 40under40, and several other teaching awards.
The W.L.Gore Lecture Series in Management Science is sponsored by an endowment from the Gore family. It features experts in the application of probability, statistics, and experimental design to decision making, including applications in academia, business, government, engineering and medicine.
